Argument in favor of Barack Obama
Obama can raise the level of political discourse
Rating: 4
In his speech in Philadelphia in March, Obama was able to get churches, synagogues, colleges, and other groups are initiating sophisticated discussions of race relations
as a direct result of that speech. If he can, in the course of one speech about race, initiate this kind of discourse, and elevate the level of discussion from 7th grade to college, can he do the same for other issues?
Is it just possible that he has the talent to write and deliver a speech on say terrorism, and change the discussion from 'you're with us or with the terrorists', to the real complexities and nuances that comprise the whole
issue? Or on gun control, or abortion, or foreign relations?
Perhaps I'm going too far in suspending my disbelief, but I think the answer is yes. Starting with the first TV presidential debates in 1960, we have pretty much gone from persuading voters via meaningful political discourse,
to selling candidates with the same methodology that works so well to sell soap and soda. This guy made a real and viable attempt to change that sad progression. It's amazing.
Now I haven't suspended my disbelief entirely. I know that talk show guys and the other campaigns will try to bring the discussion back to the 7th grade level ("Oh yea, then how come he didn't completely disassociate himself from that reverend?') where politicians are adept at maneuvering and
pundits are adept at analyzing. But if anyone can defeat the reality that we have become accustomed to IMO, it is Obama.
