Argument in favor of Love/Hate

It's not black and white
Rating: 2

Obviously, the issue of illegal immigrants is very complicated. But there seems to be some sort of underlying notion that Americans deserve to be here, while everyone else doesn't. We need to remind ourselves that none of us is a born and bred "American"--aside from Native Americans. To deport illegal immigrants for failing to undergo an extremely complicated process that may force them to return to their native countries anyway. Additionally, many typically right-wing conservatives appreciate illegal immigrants because they can employ them for below minimum wage. Many Americans don't want the kind of jobs that immigrants typically take.
Which is not to say that illegal immigrants should be granted full amnesty. Instead, they should undergo a legalization process now, that will eventually require them to receive the benefits and costs of being an American citizen (i.e. voting, as well as paying taxes). The process of becoming a citizen should be made easier, such that immigrants have ready access and don't need to come here illegally.
