Argument against John McCain
Why hasn't the Reverend Hagee incident received as much (negative attention) as the Reverend Wright scandal?
Rating: 3
Reverend Hagee's comments that God sent Hitler and the Nazis to send Jews to Palestine strike me as more offensive than Reverend Wright's remarks--as do their respective candidates responses. Initially, McCain actively sought Hagee's endorsement--Hagee, a man who called the Catholic church "the Great Whore" and claimed that God sent Hurricane Katrina because New Orleans had scheduled a gay pride march. McCain rejected the endorsement only after Hagee's most recent anti-Semitic rant. Such behavior is much like McCain's cosying up to President Bush. He is willing to compromise his beliefs in order to achieve a wider conservative base by ingratiating himself with ultra right-wing leaders. Obama, in contrast, never sought the endorsement of his pastor, and can bear no more responsibility for his remarks than any of us can for our religious clergy. Obama took the controversy as an opportunity to treat us like equals and address major concerns with our country. I have yet to see John McCain talk to us as people or express any genuine opinions.
