Clinton graduated from Maine South High School in 1965. She previously attended Maine East High School, where she was a member of student council and National Honor Society. Clinton was also a National Merit Finalist. Clinton attended Wellesley College, where she became president of the Wellesley Young Republicans. She resigned from the position as her beliefs became more liberal-oriented. In 1968, she became president of the Wellesley College Government Association. She graduated with honors in 1969 with a B.A. in political science and delivered the commencement address. She then entered Yale Law School, where she served on the editorial board of the Yale Review of Law and Social Action. She received a Juris Doctor degree in 1973.

Hillary Rodham married Bill Clinton, who was a year behind her at Yale Law School, in 1975. She had previously moved to Arkansas in order to live with him and teach at the University of Arkansas School of Law. She initially decided to keep her maiden name, but later used Clinton. She gave birth to Chelsea, her only child, in 1980. In 1992, Bill Clinton declared his candidacy for president, and Hillary became first lady in 1993. She was the first First Lady to hold a post-graduate degree, and the first to have an office in the West Wing. In 1998, allegations regarding Bill's extramarital affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky surfaced, eventually leading to his impeachment. Although Hillary initially refuted the claims as slander, she later said that she had mistakenly believed her husband's claim that the allegations were false, and speculations that she might file for divorce surface. However, Hillary issued a public statement that she would support her husband.
