Gay marriage is a union between two members of the same sex who are afforded the same rights and privileges as members of opposite sexes. Gay marriage is recognized in five countries, including Belgium, Canada, Netherlands, South Africa and Spain. Within the United States, gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts, and will be recognized in California beginning June 14. Aruba, Israel, Netherlands Antilles, New Mexico, New York and Rhode Island recognize “foreign marriages,” or marriages performed in regions in which same-sex marriage is legal.
